In a prominent place on campus this row of clocks can be seen day and night.

These clocks, with their city boldly proclaimed beneath, are another simple, yet vivid reminder of the mission field swirling around my elbows each day that I walk on campus. Among the 48,000 students that weave in and out of the classrooms and hallways every day, you can find someone from one of the 130 countries represented at FIU.

After nearly ten years of mixing with the nations, it still astounds me to know I have this privilege (and responsibility) to bring them the Word of Truth. Many of them are ready to hear. I know however, that I am not guaranteed to have this privilege tomorrow.
The time is now.

Everybody has a story... and I love a life story.

I am actually still learning Rosie's life story, but wanted to share a few things I do know about my sweet neighbor.

Rosie just celebrated her 89th birthday.

A French-Canadian, Rosie moved to Miami at age three, just prior to the horrible hurricane of 1926. Some of her first memories of life are playing in enormous puddles of water that stayed around after the hurricane. Many lives were lost in that storm- God spared Rosie's.

Rosie shared with me that her fondest memory of her life was when she was 14. A boy moved next door and became interested in her. Since no dating was allowed, Clifford (age 16) helped his mother wash the dishes each night after dinner and then came over to help Rosie wash their dinner dishes; they were then allowed to sit and visit on the porch.

Clifford joined the Navy at age 17 and married Rosie a few years later.

Rosie was an elevator operator during the War (pictured here in her uniform) and Clifford survived a bombing and sinking of his Naval ship. Rescued from the burning water by another ship, that too was attacked and sunk three days later. He survived.

Rosie and Clifford raised ten children in Miami.

After serving our country for 21 years, Clifford worked for the Miami telephone company-- caring for the lines via ladders, such as in this photo. Clifford passed away 19 years ago.

Rosie still lives on her own and loves to garden on her little lanai.

Rosie and I love to sit and chat.

She has a clear mind and stays very active. She tells me every where she went during the week (still drives the Miami streets) and loves to reminisce over the memories of her life.

Rosie's feet have walked many miles in 89 years. She has traveled to many places in the world. But these feet have not yet come to the Cross. This is my prayer for Rosie.

Hands on Purpose

Take a set of willing hands...

hands that sewed cloth bags;

hands that purchased snacks and writing tools;

hands that designed and printed brochures;

hands that were willing to work with a purpose.

Bring all of these together in one night

and fill 130 bags with oranges, apples, highlighters,

pencils, water, and printed information

about Campus Bible Fellowship ...

and this is what you get.

A bag for each newly arriving International student

that will be coming to orientation tomorrow;

A bag to say 'welcome';

A bag full of comforting things on your first day

at the university in a strange country;

A bag that tells you how to find truth on campus.

We do not get to meet these students personally tomorrow but have been allowed to leave this token of love for them while they attend orientation.

We have seen over and over, the amazing ways God brings the students to us who are ready to hear the amazing love story from God's Word.

Who will be the next one?

In Christ Alone

Are you feeling a little worn out lately? Perhaps you could even echo the words of King David, "I am feeble and severely broken" (Psalm 38:8). You would certainly not be alone; Job declared, after suffering great loss in his life, “My spirit is broken" (Job 17).

The sight of this broken butterfly this week caused me to ponder on suffering and hurt. Whether it is consequences of our own doing, or a painful experience God has allowed for growth and maturing, there is no getting around that we all face the hard times.

It is in those moments I must remember to run to the One who can heal; the One who suffered far greater than I could ever fathom... and that He did so for me! With the amazing gift of forgiveness and salvation, it is Jesus Himself who came to heal the brokenhearted; to provide liberty for those in bondage; to comfort those who mourn, make beauty out of ashes, and give a garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. (Is. 61).

I am not experiencing great loss or suffering right now; just thanking God for the visual reminder that when it comes, (it always does) in Christ alone is my hope.

Hope your New Year is filled with many reminders of who Jesus is.

A Rare Treat

It isn't often that we get to meet the parents of our students, particularly the ones who live outside of America. However, God gave Michael and me a special privilege this month to meet the mother of one of our girls. In all the activities of December, this rare treat will stand out in our minds as one of the most special for a long time.

We have previously 'met' her mother and father on Skype when she brought her laptop to our home. W__ is a good translator and so we enjoyed trying to visit with them. When we learned that her mother would be coming to Miami to visit W__, we were very delighted for this privilege to meet her in person.

W__ and her mother invited us over for a meal. They were still cooking when we arrived, but they had obviously spent many hours preparing the food and we were quite touched with their love.

W__ and her mother J__, had carefully prepared most of the food without soy as I cannot eat soy. Since Chinese put soy/tofu/etc., in nearly everything they eat, I was deeply touched by their kindness. I know it was a sacrifice for them.

Everything was so good- even the very spicy sauce in the orange bowl. We dipped our dumplings into it.

After dinner we shared gifts. J__ brought me some handcrafted earrings among other things. Her husband also sent some fun things for Michael.

I had prepared a small bag of items J__ could take home with her, including a small snow globe with the nativity scene inside it. I included a letter expressing my heart to J__ (for her daughter to translate at a later time). In part of the letter I told her if I could speak Chinese I would want to tell her about Jesus, the baby in the snow globe. I included a very simple explanation of the Gospel. To all of our surprise, J__ attempted to read the letter... aloud. As she only speaks a few words in English, I was stunned.

J__ has been trying to read English and did an amazing job. Her daughter helped her with words she did not know and translated the meaning of my letter as she went along. It was breath-taking to hear her read the name of Jesus for the first time; for her daughter to correct her pronunciation; for her to attempt to read the story of the Gospel; for W__ to translate. I was nearly in tears.

J__ told me in broken English that she did not understand.
Once, I too, did not understand. How grateful I am that our loving Heavenly Father patiently drew me until one day I understood my need and said 'yes' to His great love and salvation.
How grateful I am He allowed me to lead her daughter to the Truth-Giver.
The gratefulness in my heart that I could be a seed-planter in her mother's life simply spills over the edges of my cup. I wanted to share some of that blessing with you.

J__ will be here for several weeks. I am excited to know that God always makes a way for His Truth to be revealed-- despite all odds.

Praise to the Almighty!

Christmas Tea

Recently I took several of my university girls to our church's annual Christmas Tea. Besides being fun, it is one more way to share Christ with my girls.

I had the privilege of being a hostess of a table which means I was to decorate it as I wished, and serve the guests who graced my corner of the room.

(Yes, those are chopsticks at this setting;

sometimes a fork is rather difficult for my newly arrived Asian girls.)

Below are few of my daughters I brought to the Tea.

I have had the joy of leading

a few of these to the Lord this year

and discipling the others.

This girl had never heard the Gospel before I met her, and until this day,

never heard about Jesus' birth. She asked me about the nativity figures

here on the floor, so we had a great time together, sitting on the floor

in an impromptu Bible lesson. I was able to give her a mini-nativity

of her own to take home before we left the Tea.

Tell Me More

Some of you have asked us to 'tell me more' on some of our recent posts. The previous post (Dec 20) about our Cookie Boxes was one such request.
We would love to tell you more. :)

Functioning on campus as a ministry requires that we meet the University guidelines; in return we are allowed to reserve room for Bible studies, plan for Literature Tables each week, hold CBF functions and events on campus, and use University audio/visual equipment.

This, in turn, means we have a lot of interaction with staff and faculty at FIU. As we fill out paper work, reserve tables and rooms, and such, we have gotten to know many of them on a personal basis.

We hear of their personal struggles, family joys, and daily work challenges. Most of them do not know the Lord, so these long-term relationships have led to sharing Jesus with them, little by little. Giving them a small box or tin of Christmas sweets each December is just one more way to remind them that we are interested in them as an individual. Adding the tract to the gift is another reminder that we are interested in their spiritual needs as well.

This gesture of love has reached into hearts and made a difference in our ability to speak freely with them about the Lord Jesus. This is our tenth year to share our love in this way.

The past three years, a small class at church has opted to make their 'annual Christmas gathering' a day to make sweets for this outreach. Instead of buying gifts for each other, they make and bake a delightful array of goodies to help us in our adventure. Gathering in a home to bake, decorate, assemble, and fellowship has proved to be more rewarding than any party, white-elephant-gift-giving, or holiday dinner than we have experienced in a long while. If your family would like to implement this delightful way to demonstrate God's love, feel free to contact me with any questions. It could be adapted to just about any holiday in the calendar.

Cookie Boxes

What can you do to share the love of the Savior in this season?

Take some willing hands

and some giving hearts.

Bake some cookies

and candies;

Add a little fudge...

and box them in a pretty container.

Add some simple curled ribbon on the top,

a tag that says you love and appreciate the recipient,

and include the amazing Gospel message to each box.

Stack them up to make sure there is enough...

and head to the University

to share them with those who don't know

the reason for this delightful season.

Include a tract even for one who knows Jesus

so she can share it with her co-workers

who have never met Him.

Give a cookie box to the same office

you have for the last eight or nine years...

your consistent love is one more way

to demonstrate the love of the unchangeable God.

Thank you Father, for sending Your Son-

and for surrounding us with others

who want to help make an eternal difference

in the lives of those we touch on campus.

Please bless the hands that baked and packed;

and please use the cookies and tracts

for these we love, to point the way to You.

Treasures by the Sea

Another semester is finished and another set of students have graduated from the university. It has been a very full semester with many joys as we have served among our kids. We have taken the past few days to rest and step away from our regular schedules.

Time to head to the sea!

We found many treasures by the sea... like this sundial in a little garden near the ocean.

Many beautiful birds were ours to observe.

And we never tire of watching the waves crash upon the shore, only to return to their rightful place. (Psalm 104)

My parents were able to join us for this get-away.

We found treasures in the sand

and watched others catch treasures from the sea.

This Snowy Egret (I think) was a delight to watch.

Walking along the sand we found many Portuguese Man-o-War and this jellyfish that was larger than a dinner plate. I think it is a Moon jellyfish.

Each day we saw many pelicans and watched their fascinating behavior.

Pelicans have a wing span between 6 and 10 feet.

One day I found many birds sitting in the reeds on the sand dune, weaving back and forth as the wind rocked the tall grasses back and forth.

A favorite find of mine was the Crown of Thorns in the little garden where we saw the sundial.

This man caught a treasure on the end of his fishing pole and offered it to us for dinner... a hammerhead shark!

Just the sound of the waves and the soaring of the birds is a calming treasure by the sea.

And God called the dry land Earth,

and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas.

And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:10

Celebration!

Sharing the joys of the true Christmas meaning with our CBF family is something we look forward to each December. We often get to do this throughout the year in our Bible studies, but adding the festive food, and fellowship to a night away from their books is a nice treat for all of us.

This year we were able to have a catered meal from a Cuban family from our church. New believers themselves, it was a delight to work together with them on this evening. Added to that was the amazing chocolate suckers from Alabama (see previous post), and 30 students from around the world.

The laughter and giggles were a good way to get their minds off exams for a few hours. The games were great avenues to meet new friends. The quiet time in the Word as Michael shared from Luke was a reminder (and news to some) why we do Christmas in the first place.

What a delightful way to begin December!

Our server was a doctor in Cuba; she gave up a lot to come to America.

She is learning English and tried very hard to communicate with us.

Just relaxing for the evening!

At one table was marshmallows and spaghetti. They had to decide what they wanted to build. Some of our students have private Bible studies with us because they cannot come to the group Bible study. This was a fun way to get to know fellow students they had never met before.

After a bit of discussion, they decided they wanted to build a church. It was interesting to watch the interaction and listen to the dialogue as some have only just been introduced to God and church.

The cross was one of the first things to be made, and attached as soon as the structure could hold it.

They told me this guy was the preacher... complete with pulpit and Bible!

Of course, all the little marshmallows were the 'people'.

This little guy is the son of the caterer who informed us that he too was "part of the company".

Table games were available, but some just loved to talk.

Time for some group games!

Some cultures don't play a lot of games, so we have to keep it simple and remember that language is often a roadblock. Laughter is understood around the world, however. :)

Each team got three similar boxes, a roll of wrapping paper and tape with a pair of scissors. Their task-- to beautifully wrap the boxes as quickly as they could.

Michael told them that he was short on time this Christmas and needed them wrapped to put under the tree for me.

This team however, tore, taped, crunched, and folded as fast as they could.

While the other team methodically worked together, calmly and with precision.

They actually finished first and the boxes were quite lovely.

This team finally finished and arranged their boxes to cover up their ~~mess~~ masterpieces.

Our server did not need any English words to express her assessment of their wrapping skills. We giggled with her as much as we did the teams.

Luke 2 was our focal point in the Word.

For some, it was their very first time to hear the Story.

As we said good-night to each one, we handed them one of these chocolate suckers.

Celebrate His birth!

God and the Chocolate

Let me tell you a story...

Every year we give our CBF students an evening to celebrate the birth of our Savior. It is our gift to them.

A night of good food, relaxing fellowship, fun games, and a time to reflect on the One who really matters.

A night where they do not have to plan, organize, or bring anything but themselves.

This year we asked a sweet friend in Alabama to make some of her beautiful star suckers so we could give one to each student at the celebration. Kathy said it could be done. We waited for 50 chocolate stars to arrive here in the tropics.

Kathy believed that shipping them by overnight-air in a box cooled with ice, arriving several days before our celebration would be just the thing. She artfully (and expertly) made the suckers, carefully boxed them and sent them on their way.
The suckers did not arrive the next day...
or the next...
or the next.

I have never prayed about chocolate suckers in my life, but I did now. Several others in Florida and Alabama did too. (We learned they were somewhere in Miami... but not at our house.) They were just suckers-- but after all the planning an anticipation here in Florida and all the delight and work in Alabama, we knew God could find the lost suckers, and believed He would if it would bring Him glory.

Four days traveling in a box that was no longer cool, arriving in 79* weather, by the postman, (not special overnight-air), the chocolate suckers arrived 21 hours before our celebration... and were not even melted. Not one.

I am not sure what God did to keep the box cooled for four days, but I know when we ask in faith He is pleased to show His hand in our lives in truly amazing ways.

Thank you God for the chocolate, and for caring for the small things in our lives!

We Give Thanks

Homework, exhaustion, and illness kept several of our CBF family from gathering around our table today. God sent us three beautiful reasons to give thanks for though on this lovely Thanksgiving Day.

V__ and W__ have come to know the Lord since arriving at FIU and they continue to grow in the knowledge of Him. Recently G__ has begun Bible studies with us to quench her thirst for answers about God. All of them wanted to talk of spiritual issues around the table and throughout the day.

When the dishes were washed and our girls had gone home, our thoughts drifted to the dozens that have encircled our table the past ten years. They now circle the globe-- many of them our children in the faith.

There are so many more waiting to hear the truth. Tonight we give thanks for the countless we have been able to tell.

Students practicing yoga can often be seen as we walk about the campus.

Trying to achieve a oneness with God, they believe they can only transcend through self-exertion (everything must be earned, allowing no room for God's grace). Yoga is a religious practice infused with mysticism, particularly Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. They believe they can reach their inner-most spiritual self through these practices.

Seeing the students practice yoga is disturbing, but like other students who worship false gods, avoid any set faith, or deny God altogether, it is a vivid reminder of why we are here.

Therefore God also has highly exalted Him

and given Him the name which is above every name,

that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,

of those in heaven, and of those on earth,

and of those under the earth,

and that every tongue should confess

that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Some TLC

Two of our girls were happy to have a day off classes and out of the lab. After some shopping they joined us for dinner. (We have a standing invitation for any of our students to come over when they can.)

They were good learners and great help in the kitchen while I made some Indian dishes. (This one will be posted on the recipe blog when I can find a minute to post it.)

They raved over the food and then we ate ice cream sundaes. (You can feed a college student just about anything and they will boost your kitchen smile.)

No evening would be 'normal' without the technology that comes in tow with university students. I try to keep current in being able to relate to them, but I still have to get used to them pulling it out for nearly every aspect of their life: calendars, addresses, web surfing, photos, games, class schedules, alarms, Skype, gas mileage records for their car, music... they even have their Bible and sermon notes all in one tiny gadget.

Hugs, tissues, laughter, and love, still come by the old fashioned method though; perhaps that is why they still come over.

A Surprise

Remember this tree?

Two weeks ago I featured this tree on campus that gives us one of our beautiful fall colors. You can read the post here.

There is actually more than one of these trees on campus and they have intrigued me greatly. After two weeks of searching and asking, I finally found the name of it--

The Silk Floss Tree.

It grows in Brazil and Argentina... and at F.I.U. :)

I was told it can grow in parts of California as well.

The Silk Floss Tree grows to 40-60 feet tall and like lots of sun. Not many pests bother it.

When I walked past the tree today I was stopped in my tracks when I saw thorns all over the trunks and branches. They were not there two weeks ago when I first marveled over the blooms.

The leaves fall off the tree; the flowers appear; and as the flowers fade and fall, the thorns grow.

Apparently they hold water to supply the tree with moisture. It looks wicked, but what an amazing plan of the Mater Creator to take care of one of His beautiful creations! (Dry season begins in three weeks.)

In this photo below I took about one week ago you can see a few thorns beginning to grow. I did not notice them when I took the picture.

I also learned that its amazing cycle is not finished... next, pods are supposed to appear which contains the silk floss inside. I will try to watch for them so you can enjoy this tree with me. To be continued...

Serving

On any given day we can be found with a variety of students and friends. Whether student, professor, FIU employee, or neighbor, each one has their own story; each one has their own needs.
Here are a few of those God has allowed us to serve in the past few days.

D__ has been coming to our group Bible studies on campus but openly says she is not a believer. God is slowly opening up the heart of this dear girl to His Truth and love.

S__ is a new believer from the Dominican Republic. I have the privilege of discipling her and watching her grow stronger each week in Jesus. S__ is a student, and head of an Environmental Department on campus.

These young ladies have been coming to church with us recently.

Y__ is Arab/Cuban. V__ is Peruvian and has just put her faith in Jesus. :)

S__ is the girlfriend of a young man who recently put his faith in Jesus and is growing in Christ. Our class at church hosted a baby shower for her as another way to demonstrate our love for S__.

B__ is a Jewish student who is desperately searching for meaning and truth. Michael was able to open the Bible with him last week on campus.

'Little Man', a sweet boy at church, is from Cuba. His love for Jesus is quite evident. His puppet was an image on a shirt he couldn't bear to part with, so his mother made a hand puppet out of the shirt for him. 'Little Man' was so delighted!
See the pencil in his pocket... he is learning to take notes during the sermon.

S__ and I meet each week on campus for Bible study. She is a new bride. Though Chinese, S__ lived most of her life in Brazil. We are praying for the salvation of her husband.

And no week would be complete without a visit from my neighbor, Rosie. Rosie came to Miami from Canada just before the 1925 hurricane and is quite a lady. She too needs Jesus.

Our family ever grows as the months pass; so too, does our love for each one.

Fall Colors

As you may know, we don't have Autumn in the subtropics. Sometimes I even forget the season exists-- until I hear people talking about hay rides, raking leaves, or the beautiful fall colors. We don't rake leaves, drink hot cocoa, or enjoy hay rides, but we do have fall colors.

Would you like to see some?

These are called neoregelias.

They have 'tanks' in the center that catch the rain and grow beautiful little flowers.

I think they make a delightful border.

Mexican Petunias are part of our fall colors.

I cannot find the name of this tree, however it is also one of our fall colors. It has been blooming profusely for over a month on campus.

The petals fall to the ground... does that count?

Peanut butter

I wasn't thrilled to find I had to pay several more dollars for a jar of peanut butter this week at the store. I was, however, so grateful to have it on hand for one of our girls who came and visited us today.
A PhD student in chemistry, a drivers license, and a brand new car, but she had never, ever tasted a peanut butter and jelly sandwich... until today.

homemade bread, blueberry jam, and peanuts... yep, pretty good!

She has also personally come to know that, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." (Matt 4:4) He has satisfied her longing soul, and filled her hungry soul with goodness. (Ps 107:9)

Rainy Season

Rainy Season begins the first day of June and implies just what it says-- rain! Often just a brief storm each day or so and then the sun is back out in full force, along with some powerful humidity. The last several days though, have been non-stop rain, even during the night; thunder and lightning, drenching rain for almost four days... rain, rain, rain!
So, what does rainy season look like?

Rainy Season ends December first.
We shall have sunshine and flowers for Christmas. :)

For as the rain cometh down,

And the snow from heaven,

And returneth not thither,

Philosophy on Campus

The past few days the University has placed scratch boards up in the piano room on campus, which is a place to sit or visit, pound out whatever you like on the grand piano, or look at the art exhibits on the wall. [We featured some of this art in this post.] Only one scratch board is up at a time with a small sign in the corner for the topic; two metal stylus pens hanging on the sides to scratch your thoughts; and the freedom to draw or write whatever you want about the topic. The finished boards will be hung in the art museum on campus.

I missed the first two but was told that one of the topics was 'dreams'. Before our group Bible study last night I discovered this board- with the topic of Existentialism.

Given the difficulty proponents of existentialism even have in describing what it means, I was not surprised to see this definition or the wide variety of pictures and words on the board.

The students were, however, ready to supply quite array of beliefs-- mostly in words.

While I was observing, a young man named Angel, asked me if I was religious. This gave me a delightful time to share God's truth with him. Angel, a follower of Buddha was quite receptive and asked good questions. He also accepted a Gospel booklet I had with me after I learned that he would only be in Miami three more weeks.

As I read and observed the board, I became sad to see again the thought processes of our college-age generation. Much of the words and pictures were not what we would want to share here in a photo, but believe it is important for you to generally know what is taught, allowed, and done on the campuses of our universities. It is their great need for why we are here.

At the top center of the photo below were etched the words, "Nothing is true". Knowing the Author of truth personally, I picked up the stylus and wrote those exclusive and cherished words from the Gospel of John, "Jesus said, I am the way the truth and the life." There was space just begging to be filled with a visual of the cross. I realize someone will probably scratch it out tomorrow, but perhaps another student, like Angel, will pass this way and read those words that give such clear direction for life.

"...He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. The Seed in Itself

Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so. And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. I have really come to love these two verses. Sometimes we glide over them- at least I did, because I have known them nearly all my life. When I see a seed or fruit it is easy to glide over the stunning evidence that I am witnessing direct evidence of the truth in Genesis 1.

Just for fun, I threw some papaya seeds in a pot of dirt and watched their amazing growth. I have no yard, so I gave the young shoots (around five inches at the time) to a friend who planted several in her yard.

Within a year's time the trees were very tall and producing yummy papayas in agreement with Genesis 1:11-12.

I have never struggled with the question of evolution but many of our university students do. In the last ten years, I have seen the power of these verses open the understanding in the student's mind of God and His creation over and over again.

Reading the simple truth that God designed the plants to grow, flourish, produce, die, and then do it all over again within itself is stunning. Many times the students tell us that down deep they had some reservations about evolution and seeing Genesis 1 first-hand helped dispel the darkness and reveal the One True God.

I have been noticing this timeless truth around me in the palm trees in Florida. These seeds certainly came from with the tree.

They then branched out in a wave of green glory.

Before long, the flowery bunches dry in the hot sun and produce seeds in abundance.

The orchid- a parasite, grows on the outside of many trees,

not just palms, and is not a product of the tree itself.

It is an amazing cycle- one even the bees benefit from.

Here are some other palm seeds,"from within itself" to evidence God's amazing order and plan.

Palms bear dates, coconuts and other delicious fruits and seeds. Technically a coconut is not in the nut family, but it is accurate to refer to the coconut as a nut, a seed, and a fruit.

There are many other evidences around me of God's everlasting truth in Genesis 1 such as the Sausage Tree...

or the Bottle Brush tree, which often holds it fruit close to the stems for several years before it releases the seeds.

One of my favorites here in Miami is the Tabebuia Tree.
It is pretty much behind the scene all year until about March when it explodes with colorful blooms in many colors. Yellow is common around Miami. The flowers usually cover the tree before any leave show forth.

This tree has very bug-resistant wood that is often used for decking or furniture. Its bark is better known as Pau D'Arco, which can be made into a tea as a natural antibiotic.

Once the flowers are gone and the leaves appear, the seed pods are making their appearance to prove once again the God is the Creator of all and it is good!

The seed pod breaks open and the seeds flutter away on the wind or carried away by birds...

...or humans like me who are so fascinated by the simple but profound truth of creation.

Grapefruits bear grapefruits; Coconut Palms produce Coconut palms; monkeys produce monkeys; Man bears Man. There is no other way. Look around you and see how many ways you can verify the truth of Genesis 1:11-12. It isn't just in the trees, but when I see one such as this magnificent tree I can only worship with awe, the One who made the world, and the One Who made me!.

Discerners

Discerning truth is often a hard discipline for our students. Some of them even tell us they don't like to sit still because then they have to think. They have grown up in a life where media is fast-paced and eye-catching. They have persuasive professors. They hate to tell their friends 'no'. Most of them have parents who have not actively taught them how to discern what they take in from media, friends, education, and even spiritual leaders.

The past few weeks we have had a faithful half-dozen or so who are coming to Bible study to sit, learn, discuss, ask, and discern.

Michael has been teaching them specifically to wade through the doctrines of environmentalism, discern the truth from the lies, and how to be good stewards of God's creation in a proper balance.

At least three regular attenders are currently taking environmental classes that are teaching a faulty world-view. It has been helpful for them to have a place to talk it out with Biblical feedback and Christian support. It is so encouraging to see the Ancient Word of God still alive and so fresh that we can apply it practically for current life-issues and challenges.

For the word of God is

quick, and powerful,

and sharper than any twoedged sword,

piercing even to the dividing asunder

of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow,

and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Seen on Campus

Somehow among the streams of people walking around campus, a few animals make their home here at FIU. One of the more notable birds on campus I have taken photographs for you to see are called ibis.

Ibis are found around the world, but love to be near water, especially marshes, swamps, and wetlands. They prefer to move about in the trees, though we often see them on the ground. On campus we can usually find them around one of the ponds.

Ibis use their long beak to dig in the mud for their favorite food- fish. The also eat frogs, crabs, insects and some plants. The like to poke their beaks in the grassy areas on campus if there are not too many students nearby.

Not usually over 25 inches high, their pinkish beak and legs make a noticeable contrast with their snowy white feathers. They do have a few predators such as snakes, foxes, and hawks. Their wing span can be 47 inches across. I enjoy watching them fly.

They live between 8-15 years. A group of Ibis can be called a 'congregation' or a 'wedge'.

Just in case you thought I wasn't really on campus when I took these pictures, here is proof that this congregation of Ibis really do have FIU spirit!

God's Grace

By God's grace I was able to attend the ladies conference at our church this week. (An anonymous sister in Christ paid my way.) And in His grace, we were privileged to feast on the Word through the teaching of Reba Bowman, a woman who has a passion to serve God.

By God's grace, He allowed three of my girls to attend with me, and each of them came free because of other sisters in Christ who paid their way. Coming from three different countries, wearing tennis shoes, flip-flops, and stilettos, each came with great spiritual needs... and God met each of them without disdain.

By God's grace, one of them who is deeply searching the Word for answers to her emptiness inside, took time to thank me in the wee hours of the morning for bringing her.

By God's grace I have been saved and set apart to share His amazing Truth and Love with this precious girls at FIU. God is good!

Seven countries represented in our first Bible study this semester-- not unusual but we try not to take it for granted. God has brought the world to our doorstep.

Chuck is our sweet boy from China; a son in the faith and one with a heart-passion to tell others about the One True God. He had to leave us this week to return to his country. He is not sure if he can obtain proper documents to come back to America. Pray for his spiritual and personal safety.

Our purpose for these types of posts is to help you better understand what campus life is like. (You wouldn't really want to see the full reality of campus, but we like to post what we can.)

It was interesting to watch so many work on one mural. This picture is the beginning of the piece and has non-truth etched into the artwork below the branches.

This is the last section of the mural.

I find it a bit sad that even art is considered disposable these days. Soon, this will be taken down in sections and it will no longer be one piece of art.

Welcome Week (continued)

Since the university doesn't often grant rooms the first week of class for our Bible studies, we gathered instead for fellowship at a local restaurant with some of our kids. It was a great way for the students to get to know one another and our visiting friends who helped us on campus this week. It was a time of much laughter and serious spiritual conversation alike.

After all the questions, teasing, and grief the girls gave Chuck, his final assessment was that they were adorable and was quite ready to have children when God brings him a wife!

Welcome Week in Pictures

Last week we told you of our preparations for Welcome Week; now we can share the delightful view from the other side-- sharing our love with the students. They have returned to FIU in full force and we were ready.

We had a table outside under the Library to share our gift bags of water bottle, highlighter, CBF information and Gospel tracts.

In addition to our co-workers, we had a sweet family from one of our supporting churches come and share the blessings of giving Truth and a smile to our students.
Who can resist taking a bag from a sweet face like this?

The girls smiles and offer of a free gift was well-received by most who passed our table.

Their mother and father were also a big help.

All of us have had a wonderful time meeting students and giving them a bit of love in their first week of class. We have met several who expressed interest in participating in our Bible studies.

Ari (above) is from Argentina and has been in the U.S. four days.
I am holding her traditional calabash gourd with mate tea in it. Ari is holding the thermos with hot water in it. Traditionally the person preparing the mate will drink the first 'cup' through the metal straw, refill the gourd and taste it again before passing it to the next person who drinks from the same metal straw. The straw has a roundish end with tiny holes to keep the leaves from being sucked into the straw. The gourd is filled about nine or ten times and shared with many people in particular social settings before new mate is added.
For health reasons I was not able to share Ari's mate with her.

While we were outside, one of our students was inside at the Club Fair. I was also privileged to help inside for a spell helping students learn about CBF and answering questions they had about God or the Bible.

It has been in the nineties this week, but being under a bit of shade was helpful. We have already given away 1250 bags to individual students in the past few days. What a joy!

What do you do when you run out of bags?... cover the table with invitations to Bible study and give those away too!

Many people have helped us with this outreach... our church families, co-workers, Westcoast Baptist Bible College girls, a supporting church, many who prayed, and the Popkin family. Thank you all for sharing in the labor.

Hands of Love

Just a few days and 46,000 students will be dashing around campus again in search of a higher education. We have been very busy preparing for the opening week and the students from all the ends of the world that God brings to us each semester.

Lately, we have been focused on the hands-on preparation that includes preparing 1,250 welcome bags to give to students. It is such a small number in the scope of the 46,000, but it is 1,250 more who will receive the Truth of the Gospel, and an invitation to study the Bible with us on campus.

God's provision of tracts, printed invitations to CBF, a highlighter, and a sport bottle for each student is a blessing indeed. It says to each one who will be receiving them-- you are valued in God's eyes and we care about you.

This year we were also blessed with some great girls who helped us put everything together. They are college students themselves (from Westcoast Baptist Bible College in CA.) who have been serving the Lord in Miami this summer among the Jews.

This week we will say good-bye to these five ladies and the rest of the thirty-six who have impacted our lives this summer.

As they return to the West and their focus of preparing to serve God in a variety of ways, they will be leaving some practical, behind the scenes, Christ-like love in the bags they stuffed. Perhaps they will not meet the students here on earth who read these tracts and have their lives forever changed with Truth, but we feel certain the meeting in eternity will be enough time to rejoice in what God has done.

and of course, the ships do too.

Turtles love the beach, and Floridians love to protect their eggs.

Seashells love the beach (this is a conch)

Butterflies love the beach...

and I love the beach (especially when I am behind the camera).

Thank you God for making the beach and the sea to wash up on it.

25 Years and 100 Kids Later

Today we completed our twenty-fifth year of marriage. As many of our kids would say-- 'Tanks God'!

Being with each other has been an incredible journey neither of us could have plotted out quite like God has. What an amazing Father to bring us together and allow us to serve Him these years.

We talked about what we wanted to do today to celebrate and decided to spend it with our kids. Tuesday evening has been set aside for Bible study with them for the last nine years; we couldn't think of a good reason to skip out on them tonight. Not all of them could be with us of course as dozens and dozens have already left the nest and are scattered around the world.

As we shared some snacks with them this evening they asked us questions like: How did you meet? or Do you ever fight? These and other questions started a special time of discussion on marriage, dating, children, and related topics.

(One boy said he had never heard anything like this.)

Only two of them were even born when we were married. They laughed at our wedding pictures and said we looked so young.

As the night grew late, one girl said she wanted to share something. She launched into an emotional speech about how much she thanks God for our presence on campus and in her life. One boy shared that he never knew what a loving marriage really looked like until he met us since his parents divorced long ago. Another girl wept as she shared that hearing our story tonight was exactly what she needed; another told us that she now realized that she needed to let God control her life. (Anyone have a hanky??)

Somewhere along the way we have lost count as to actually how many kids God has given us to influence, lead to Christ, counsel, mentor, and invest in their lives. Their faces are deeply etched into our hearts though; their gifts fill our home; their names fill our guest book; their stories burn in our memories... and we recognize the profound love of God to have given us so many precious children.

(Getting them to stand still for a picture was a task-- they even pulled me into motion!)

Finally, we managed a semi-decent pose of just a precious few.

Tradition says the twenty-fifth wedding anniversary is known as the 'silver anniversary'.
It seemed golden to us.

Sunday Family Fellowship

Look who came to dinner!

After worship together this morning at church, we gathered some 'family' in our home for a simple meal and fellowship. There was lots of chit-chat, some guitar playing, grading papers, looking online for cars, locating home-towns on the world map, eating pound cake with blueberries (recipe here), and perusing photographs.

"Lawrence" shared with us how much he appreciated us spending time on the campus, telling him and others about Jesus. He is one of our newest boys that God has added to the Family.

In the lounge area known as 'the piano room' on campus are three long walls used to display student art projects. Today one of the art classes were creating their art after wood had already been attached to the walls.

They were creating an ecological timeline of Peru.

Each student had a segment to draw.

They were using pencil, charcoal, pastels and other similar types of medium.

These two girls were drawing a Heliconia plant (which happens to be a plant found here in Miami as well).

Jessica has started her drawing of a tiger.

This art display will be in the Piano Room for several weeks. I will try to revisit it after they are complete and get a photo to show you their finished mural.

In Need

In recent weeks we have been studying widows and 'widows indeed' in our Sunday School class. Exploring God's Word on this matter has been enlightening. Besides gaining head knowledge, we are seeking ways to apply the truths in our everyday life. The opportunity to serve in a local nursing home today was just a small way we could meet some tangible needs of those truly in need.

Of course, not everyone there fit the specific description we have been learning of in the Word, but everyone there certainly had a need. Much of it revolved around the personal touch such as a listening ear, a kiss on the cheek, or holding hands. Another need we could meet was to minister to them through music. About twenty of us were able to sing some simple songs to these precious ones. Music seems to bring so many memories out of the elderly.

Another huge need was for them to hear of our Savior. Many of the residents are Spanish-only speakers, so we brought an interpreter for the message. The children were probably the best communicators though. After these two brothers shared some songs, one man pointed to the piano player and said to me, "I'm so glad they brought that soloist!"

There was a serious game of dominoes going on as we shared in worship with these beautiful people,

... until these three siblings began signing Jesus Loves Me in Spanish.

They stopped their game, turned around to look, and listened to the simple but well-phrased truth of God's love.

There was also some well-practiced violin music from a very nervous little girl...

...which brought a delightful response from this sweet couple.

Mary Lousia and her husband, of nearly 57 years, absolutely loved the music. He tried to sing along in his 85 year old voice. And he never let go of her the entire time we were there.

A Sunday afternoon-- given to some dear ones, is just a small way to make the Word of God living, powerful, practical-- to those who have no way to pay or give back.

Now that's a joy!

Then and Now

Once upon a time... about nine years ago in fact, there was a girl who married a man and they were saved a few weeks after their wedding. God soon brought them into our lives and we had the joy of teaching them some of their first baby-steps in Jesus.

Then God gave them a beautiful baby of their own...

and another one after that.

Then one day, they left us to go serve the Lord and we missed them very much.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Today God gave us a special gift of reuniting with them and their babies. My, how they have grown!!!

God has given them two other blessings we had never met until today.

We had a lovely visit catching up and watching the children play together. To see that 'our children' still walk in the Truth and are seeking to raise their children in the ways of the Lord is a blessing hard to put into words.

It certainly gives another day of investing in the lives of others a fresh reminder of why we do this, through the easy days and hard.

Once far from God and dead in sin,

No light my heart could see;

But in God's Word the light I found,

Now Christ liveth in me.

A Packed Week

Can you tell where we have been?

Let me give you a few hints... it's not in Miami. :)

This would be in the beautiful hills of West Virginia.

It is time for our annual CBFI conference and this year it was held in Mt. Hope near Beckley, West Virginia.

We were hosted by Appalachian Bible College.

They have a beautiful campus in the wooded hills.

A few of our CBF missionaries (serving in Idaho and Indiana) were missing, but the rest of us were able to spend a few days together planning, sharing, and enjoying fellowship with one another.

Andy and his wife will be serving on the campus of Virginia Tech.

This is a very needy campus.

Jeff and his wife serve at University of North Carolina.
God is really blessing their ministry there.

Gary and his wife serve as our coordinators and on two campuses
in the Dayton, Ohio area.

Sandy and her husband serve in Syracuse, New York.

They have been there for over 30 years.

Ken and his wife are our coworkers here in Miami. We are grateful to have help on the campus of Florida International University where 46,000 students come to learn.

Dave Elmore is a gem; he is volunteering his time in Ohio as well. He is patiently trying to reinstate CBF at Wright State University where we were kicked off campus (after 30 years) for our conservative stand.

Our time together included time around the Word and caring for business related to Campus Bible Fellowship.

There was time for our traditional late-night game and fellowship time.

CBF missionaries live on College Standard Time and are not known for going to bed early!

The women have an afternoon of fellowship among themselves,

encouraging one another while the guys get-together as well.

Michael and I were surprised to hear that the young people's singing ministry (New Life Singers) from our sending church in Georgia were in the same town. We relished being able to attend a local church where they sang on Wednesday and meet up with those we have known most of their lives.

Miss Rosalie and I had some sweet time to chat. I have known her family even before she was born. (:

Now we are home again safely with memories of friends, coworkers, and God's beauty etched into our memories.

It is a blessed thing to serve Him!

Freedom Day

Tropical rains in the morning, baking in the afternoon, friends in the evening, and fireworks at night... what a great day!
We made star 'edge' cookies to hang over our Freedom Day Treats. The Freedom Day Treat recipe is on my web site here -or you can get to it in the side bar. (The actual cookie recipe will be posted in the future.)

It was our privilege to have a family over to share in their first-ever Fourth of July. They were able to leave Cuba just a few months ago.

When I gave Reycito his first-ever American flag, his mom told me he has been wanting one. They had their very first taste of blueberries too!

On the way to the park, Reycito wanted to know how many stars were on our flag... so he counted each one. (He is five years old and can also read like a pro-- in Spanish and English.)

They are all very glad to be here.

Reycito kept saying "Go U.S.A. (something that is illegal to say in public in Cuba.)

It was super fun to share in their joy when the fireworks began.

We were pretty amazed ourselves at times; they were quite beautiful.

May our Country run back to the Truth it was founded upon so that many more may come here in the future and know real freedom.

Today on Campus

No two days on campus are just alike, but there are many similarities in the spiritually parched students we see that keep us coming back day after day, year after year.

Today was one of twenty-two orientation days for incoming students this fall. FIU is expecting ten to eleven thousands new students. As we sat behind our information and literature table, we saw many parents with their children (freshmen) today as they attended the required two-day orientation sessions. On day two, the parents are not allowed to come.

Teresa, Howard, Theresa, Stephanie, Mike, Joey, and James were a few who stopped by to ask questions and find out more about CBF. Many others took literature. One young lady asked for help to learn more about the Bible.

Among the fraternities who enticed others with dancing and music to join their club, the staff workers who stopped by to say hello, dozens of elementary school children running around and participating in a chess tournament on campus, and the hundreds who walked by our table without stopping, God reminds us daily that there are plenty here who do want to know more about Him. We are grateful to be here!

The Masses

The sea, wildlife, and the gardens have all been a special reprieve for us while in Washington. We had to step downtown however, and walk among the masses of people in Pike Place in Seattle. It was definitely a fun cultural experience.

It was a cool and beautiful day in the city.

This only shows a tiny fraction of the peoples of the world that were scurrying through the market.

The beautiful colors of the flower vendors and at the fruit and vegetable stands caught our eye around each turn.

Some of the sounds included musicians and singers among the babble of voices.

These gentlemen were singing just outside Seattle's original Starbucks store.

Of course, Michael had to make a visit to Starbucks.

After a wait, he finally made it to the cashier.(yellow shirt)

His helpful cashier, Keshon.

Observing the fish market was quite the entertainment. Whenever someone would buy a fish, the employees would holler and throw it over the counter to be wrapped. Can you spot the flying fish in this photo?

Probably my favorite shop was the spice market. I especially drooled over the teas that lined the walls.

This young lady helped me find over 40 teas without caffeine that I could choose from.

The Raspberry Splash won me over with its wonderful aroma.

Yeah for tea!

Pike Place Market is a great place to mingle with the wonderful people of the world and be reminded why God has left us here on earth.

A Day With Family

We have enjoyed our break from campus, taking in all the different views here on the west coast. We spent a morning in Harbour Fountain Park (Bremerton, Washington) and had a delightful day with some of our family.

First we got on a ferry in Seattle and crossed the water.

The park was at the entrance of a naval base and had many wonderful fountains and rocks.

Butchart Garden

While in Canada, we visited an amazing garden on Vancouver Island.

In the early 1900's, Mrs. Butchart had a vision of making an old rock quarry and surrounding area into a beautiful garden.

Pictures only just begin to show the stunning beauty of the garden. I promise not to post the hundreds of photos I took, but perhaps you would like to grab a cup of tea or coffee and walk through the garden with us.
I cannot name all these amazing plants that God has made, but if you have a question about a certain photo, leave a comment and I will try to get the name for you.

Canada

We Left Hurricane Ridge (see previous post) and descended 5000 feet to the water's edge in Port Angeles and boarded a ferry to Canada.

We landed in Canada on a cool but beautiful day in Victoria.

This hotel was one of the first buildings we saw getting off the ferry.

We walked to the China Town area of Victoria and saw many interesting buildings, foods, and people.

Next, we drove to Sooke to walk Whiffen Spit, a skinny stretch of land poking out into the sea. It is about one half mile long and only a few feet wide in some areas. We met many Canadian people walking their dogs in the crisp evening.

The wildlife on this natural barrier between rough seas and the cove was everywhere.

These birds are true Canadian Geese. :)

Hurricane Ridge

Everywhere we look here in Washington is a great reminder of God's amazing Hand. The sights around Hurricane Ridge were particularly astounding to us Florida sunshine and sea-loving folks.

We have met many delightful people from around the world since arriving in Seattle (many of them at church).
Besides Americans, we have met people from Samoa, Mexico, Korea, Honduras, and Nepal. It makes us feel right at home. :)

No, we are not in Miami today, but we have been to the water's edge.

Does this give you a hint where we are?

Perhaps this massive cedar tree will give you a clue. (No evergreens or cedars in Florida.)

Today's beautiful view of Mt. Rainer was a special treat we were told, since the mountain is most often covered in clouds. (Notice the clouds at the lower section.) Yes, we are in Washington for a few days of rest and visiting family.

A Helpful Blessing

This week we had to say good-bye to Charlotte (Michael's Mother) who has been staying with us for the past three months. It is always a blessing when she visits as she becomes part of our ministry team while she is here. Sometimes she comes to campus with us and visits with our students; she loves to talk with them after Bible study; she interacts with the kids we bring to church; helps build our relationship with our elderly Catholic neighbor, and is also a big help around the house.

We love all of our supporters who find so many ways to share in our ministry. It isn't just those who give of their resources to us that we count as ministry partners. Those who pray, write notes, share ideas, or come to help us physically are all a huge blessing to us and our CBF family. Thank you Charlotte, and all of you who invest in this amazing mission field!

Worth It

This week was the first group Bible study for the summer semester. With many gone home, some not taking summer classes, or some having graduated, we never know how many will attend. Chuck was the only student who showed this week. Is it worth it ... for just one?

Michael has spent a good bit of time preparing for the summer Bible studies on campus. In addition to hours of studying to share the truth with students, there is a lot of foot work and paper work to get a room reserved on campus. Then there is the joy (but work and planning) of bringing snacks or homemade goodies for the ever-hungry college students. All in all, it takes some big effort to share God's Word each week on campus.

Michael began his new series, "Is the Bible Green?" Besides in the general culture, 'going green' is a hot topic on many university campuses. 'Saving the Earth' is often pushed through media, advertisements, and various programs on campus without the balance of Scripture..

Michael introduced the topic by directing us to Genesis 1 and Acts 17 reminding us that God is the Creator - Ruler of all. We saw that man is given dominion over creation - and responsibility, and then how creation was corrupted through sin in Romans 1, 8, and Genesis 3. By the time we perused through II Peter 3 and Revelation 21 seeing how God will resolve the sin issue and eventually create a new heaven and earth, we saw that the answer to the ecological problem and 'going green' is not financial or legal, but spiritual. It is only when man acknowledges the Creator and begins to use creation for God's glory that the problem will be solved.

Though it was just an introduction to the subject, Chuck was totally amazed. He kept telling us, "I never knew God talked about this in the Bible. This is so interesting that God talks about our responsibility in the Bible... I never knew this was in the Bible."

Miami is awash with color these days. Thought you might like to feast your eyes on God's beautiful palette.

I think this bush is named Ixora

This tree grows outside our door but I do not know the name of it.

These Royal Poinciana trees are just beginning to bloom around the city; this one is on campus.

Soon the entire top of the tree will be covered in hot red blooms. It is also called the Red Flame Tree.

Officially Finished

As of today, this semester and academic school year is now complete; graduation will be held on Monday and Tuesday. Everyone is tired (including us) but God gave us a special treat to cap off our semester. In Miami for business, sweet friends from Georgia asked us to join them for dinner this evening. What a pleasant surprise!

We ventured down to Miami Beach to eat at Joe's Stone Crab, a restaurant that is 98 years old. They certainly know their business. It was our first time to eat stone crab, liked it very much, and learned a lot along the way. The crabs are taken from the water just down the road where the sand meets the beautiful ocean; the crabs are not killed. After being caught, only one claw is removed before they are released to regrow their claw. One claw can weigh up to one half pound.

It was a joy to fellowship with friends and enjoy the beauty of the evening together.

We get a rest in the coming week and then the summer semester will begin May 9. For tonight though, it was just a nice break to enjoy the sights around town.

Procrastination Station

What are these students doing???

Well... they were studying until we came along.

It is final exam week and time to quit procrastinating. It is time for Campus Bible Fellowship to be a blessing to the students as they spend major hours in study, review, and putting the final touches on their projects. It's time for the Procrastination Station!

Free coffee, lemonade, and snacks are put out on a table in one of the heavy study zones and the sign is put up that announces 'free snacks' for students.

It doesn't take long and the line forms with eager takers who need an extra push to get them through the night.

These cookies didn't last long! As I was walking around, giving them to some boys, one said, "Homemade food is the best!" His study pal asked, "These are homemade??" I replied, Yes- made just for you." He couldn't believe it. His friend added, "That's why I live with my grandma!"

We love to visit with them to find out what their major is, what exam they are cramming for, and generally building new relationships.

We had a family from a local church come to help us; it was their first time and it looks like they enjoyed themselves.

Most of these students are in transportation, construction or engineering fields. Some are graduating soon and told us their concerns of finding work.

They ate, visited, read our literature, thanked us... and then returned to their spot to stick their nose in a book.

These guys got to giggling after they helped their classmate put sugar into his coffee when they realized they had emptied about seven or eight packets into one cup. Hmmm... perhaps sleep deprived boys can giggle just as much as the girls.

Truth or Illusion?

We commonly hear students say such things as: 'You really can't know truth' or 'That's true for you, but not for me', or 'Truth changes'. With a constant need for teaching and reinforcing the Truth of God's Word to them, we accepted the offer of one of our supporting churches to send us a young man to serve with us for a day on campus.
Matt Adams is a professional illusionist from Alabama who gave of his time and resources to share Truth with our students while using illusion and slight-of-hand demonstrations. While it was clear to us that his illusions were just that-- and not truth, it was interesting to see how easily deceived the students were. It was another clear reminder that our primary purpose for being at FIU is to warn those whom Satan is constantly and actively seeking ways to blind their minds from the glorious Truth of the Gospel.
Matt was able to interact one-on-one with his illusions and share the Gospel with them individually, through tracts, and in a group setting. His presence also gave us added opportunity to meet new students and have significant conversations with them as well. Our experience is that it often takes many months to build relationships on campus before a person trusts the Lord, so we look forward to what fruit God will bring from this in the future.

Large

We spent a large amount of time on campus yesterday (eleven hours) and saw a large amount of interesting things... such as this large wall beginning to be covered by ivy.

A large aquarium sits inside one building near the food court with beautiful sea life inside.

You can see past the fish and through to the other side where students eat their meals.

and some large coral and sea plants.

We also spied a large cow on campus.

We saw this large tree, blooming with thousands of bright green leaves.

We saw students who had a large goal-- biking all night to raise money for an organization fighting carbon monoxide poisoning.

And met for Bible study with some students with a large heart for God.

Our hearts are large with gratitude to God for allowing us to serve Him in this place.

Weekend Views

We spent the weekend enjoying a day away from campus, but couldn't leave our kids behind. :) We all enjoyed Wen's visit with us Saturday and Sunday. Her happy spirit is a joy to watch as she grows in Christ. She also enjoyed fellowship with Michael's Mom who is still here with us.

Wen had never experienced waffles, so we included her in our Saturday morning tradition. The final vote?? Wen loves waffles!

We also spent many hours in the kitchen teaching her how to make various foods, including granola.

We poked our noses outside before it got to hot and spied these flowers near our home.

This duck looked like he was enjoying the weekend as well-- can you see his smile?

The evening shadows darkened the palms as the sunset spread across the sky.

But a closer look tells us the coconuts are getting bigger every day.

These with smooth trunks are called royal palms and do not bear coconuts.

Waiting

While on campus I saw all theses students waiting..

and waiting...

and growing more excited as they waited.

It was the moment they had been waiting for after campaigning all week for

student government positions.

Hearing the winning names announced of the student president and vice president brought deafening cheers...

and wild excitement among the waiting.

The victors were raised up on the shoulders of their supporters

and carried off in an unbelievable cacophony of music, yelling, and cheers.

It brought to mind that if we respond in this manner after just a few weeks of waiting for a mere human in a leadership position in a university, to be held for the space of one year, what must our response be like when our lifetime of waiting is over and we finally see our Savior, face-to-face, as we worship Him as rightful King for all eternity?

For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. I Thess. 5:16-17

And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: “Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever!” Rev.5:13
